Sew Bee Blissful: August Block

I am participating in the Sew Bee Blissful quilting bee hosted by Jenna of Sew Happy Geek.  A little while ago, Jenna sent a package to each of us with beautiful fabric and a tutorial to make a double pinwheel block.  After a lot of mental preparation, as I can't mess this up for Miss Jenna, here is what I came up with...

I swear the points in the center do match.   It is just that the two shades of purple are so similar in some areas you can not see the line.  And my second block:

These were to be 12.5 inch square blocks, but for the life of me I could only make 12.25 inch blocks.  Why?  Why!?!?  Why, when it matters, can I not make a 12.5 inch block?  I do not know.  I measured, calculated, measured, re-calculated, etc and finally just emailed Jenna.  She was super kind and flexible and is graciously willing to take my 12.25 inch blocks for her quilt.  I really hope she is happy when she sees them in person!

We were also asked to create a block (the design being our choice) for the back of her quilt.  I thought a modern-ish log cabin would be fun. I have been fascinated by a modern log cabin posted by Jennifer of Ellison Lane Quilts, so I kind of re-created this for Jenna's back block.  This is 6.5 inches square.

I really like the idea of having a 6 inch block from the scraps of each monthly block for the back of my quilt.  I am off to make one for myself right now!

Pretty pinwheel blocks!!

I have found that Aurifil 50wt thread is thinner and helps with removing bulk. Who would think that thread would help, right?
I have also found that most sewing machines do not have a scant quarter inch foot which is what most of us quilters need. Test by sewing 3 1.5 strips together and see if they measure 3.5 inches. Mess around until you find that 'sweet' spot or perfect 1/4 seam. It's always less than a 1/4 inch.
Hope that helps!

Those are cool, and love the log cabin for the back, both what you've done and the idea of it.

I'm now paranoid about doing my first blocks in case I don't get the measuring right lol

Really like the colours in the block to go onto the back of the quilt. You must do one with those colours on the front!
