Enchanted Bobbin Flickr Research

Today we are lucky to have a guest blogger, Jennifer of the Enchanted Bobbin.  She is doing a bit of research on the Modern Quilter's use of Flickr.  If you have a few minutes to your day, please have a read through the description of her project (below) and then follow the links at the bottom to share your experiences.  Thanks so much!  Over to Jennifer....

My name is Jennifer and I am an English professor, mom to three kids (ages 3 to 18), and a quilter. I am doing research on the ways in which modern quilters use flickr -- both as a creative resource and for connecting with one another -- and I need your help!

I studied at Indiana University's Folklore Institute, and although I am best known as author of articles and books on fairy tale history, I have longstanding interests in material culture. I knit my way through undergrad and grad school, when I did field-based research with lay midwives and spinners...and for the past few years I have been slightly obsessed with sewing and quilting. My virtual quilting friends know me as The Enchanted Bobbin, on flickr and my blog.  Please feel free to drop by!

This project is very personal, because I have felt firsthand just how dynamic, inspiring, and positive the online quilting community can be.  At the same time, I have been struck by the fact that scholars who study quilters and quilting aren't aware of the depth and breadth of online activity, much of it involving flickr in one way or another.  "Photo sharing" doesn't quite capture what happens there.

I want to include the work and words of as many quilters as I can.  Whether you feel motivated to make a short comment or to offer a more detailed reflection, your contribution would be greatly appreciated. I will be presenting my first findings at the American Folklore Society meeting in New Orleans at the end of October and hope to develop the research into an article after that. I am very happy to share my findings (and to report on the reception of the AFS paper) with all participants. To do so, I'll be posting on my blog and sending flickr mail to everyone who contributes.

An overview of the project and information about participation can be found here and discussion is invited here. You can also write to me privately: jschack(at)uoguelph(dot)ca or enchantedbobbin(at)gmail(dot)com.  Thank you for your contribution!
